Harvest 2022: The 5 top-yielding winter wheat varieties map

Throughout the harvest season, we are updating our handy map with the latest data from 2021’s AHDB wheat Recommended List harvest results.

Wheat summary

Results from 23 treated winter wheat trials have now been reported in the AHDB Recommended Lists (RL) winter wheat trials

The average treated yield of control varieties stands at 11.88 t/ha – 0.95 t/ha ahead of the five-year average (10.93 t/ha).

Wheat variety selection

In the treated trial series, Group 4 (hard) varieties continue to lead on yield. Newly recommended Champion remains at 107%, with fellow Group 4 hard variety Insitor on 105% and newly recommended hard Group 4 feed Dawsum on 104 %.

Gleam and Graham are on 103%. The other newly recommended hard Group 4 feed variety Typhoon continues to underperform in 2022 on 98%.

Skyscraper (103%) remains highest yielding of the soft Group 4s in 2022, alongside newly recommended Bairstow (also on 103%). Newly recommended Stokes is on 101%.

In the quality bread wheats, Group 1 bread-wheat variety Zyatt (101%) is the highest yielder, well ahead of Skyfall and Illustrious (96%), and Crusoe (94%).

In the Group2s, Extase is highest yielding (102%), just ahead of newly recommended variety Palladium on 101%. Newly recommended Mayflower is on 97%.

In the soft Group 3 biscuit wheats, Merit (East region) continues to perform well in 2022 (102%). Behind Merit, newly recommended Guium (101%) is just ahead of Brium (100%). The rest of the Group 3 varieties, including newly recommended Rashid, continue to struggle, underperforming their five-year averages – except Elicit, which matches it.
