ABOUT BRITAIN'S FITTEST FARMER

FINAL: 17 SEPTEMBER 2023, FARM FITNESS, LITTLE CANFIELD, DUNMOW CM6 1TD

About

Britain’s Fittest Farmer was launched by Farmers Weekly in 2018 as a fun way of sparking a vital discussion about the physical and mental health of the nation’s farmers.

As farming becomes less active and more mechanised and office-based, it’s more important than ever before to make sure Britain’s farmers are getting the exercise that they need to stay fit and healthy.

Farming can also be an isolating job, which is why it is also vital for farmers to focus on their own mental health and wellbeing so that they can keep their business in tip-top condition too.

This competition aims to get all farmers thinking and talking about their health, physical and mental, to make sure they are in top condition to run their farm businesses.

The 2023 winners have been announced and you can now apply for 2024.

The judges

Charles Anyan

Charles is an arable farmer from near Gainsborough in Lincolnshire who has always been keen on sport but, hasn’t always felt particularly good at it.

This all changed during the Covid lockdowns when he bought a pair of trainers and took up running. A  five-stone weight loss and new found love of running saw massive improvements in his mental and physical health and he has tried to promote this to others, mainly through his role as an ambassador for the Farming Community Network.

Charles’ main aim is to break the stigma surrounding mental health and get people talking more. He has run two marathons (whilst raising money for FCN) with another two planned for 2023 (Manchester and Leeds). Apart from running he also enjoys cycling, hill walking and playing rugby.

The highlight of Charles’ sporting career apart from his marathons has been seeing himself go from being the slowest prop forward in the history of Market Rasen rugby club to the slowest winger in their history.

Tom Kemp

Farm Fitness

Essex arable farmer’s son Tom is credited with building one of the world’s best gyms.

He took a dilapidated corner of the yard at the family farm and transformed it into a raw and exciting outdoor environment for people of all strengths and abilities.

“Farm Fitness is honoured to be partnering with Farmers Weekly to once again help in the hunt for Britain’s Fittest Farmer. It’s our ongoing mission to honour our agricultural roots, so this is a great privilege for us.

“I’m looking forward to seeing who’s been sowing their seeds and harvesting those gains over the past year.”

Supporting the farming community

Britain's Fittest Farmer was launched by Farmers Weekly in 2018 as a fun and friendly way to get farmers thinking and talking about their physical and mental health, to make sure they are in top condition to run their business.

This year, we have partnered with three amazing charities and are asking for donations to support their incredible work within the farming industry:

The Farming Community Network: Supporting farmers and farming families through difficult times.

RSABI: Providing emotional, practical and financial support to families across the agricultural sector.

The Farm Safety Foundation: Raising awareness of farm safety among young farmers.

Your donation will be split equally between these three charities and your contribution will help spread awareness and directly support these amazing organisations – thank you.
