Photo of the Day: Harvest paddling along nicely

Farming-mad Thomas, aged 9, is pictured following every minute of the harvest at his family farm in Norfolk on board a paddle board.

Thomas is a fourth-generation farmer in the making and enjoys “carpet farming” at home, replicating the farming activities with his scale-model toys.

The Brecks grows wheat, barley, oats and sugar beet, with the addition of a pig-finishing unit, and crops are sent to local feed mills.

Thomas’ mother Tanya, who submitted the picture via our Harvest 2023 gallery, says it’s been a very tough harvest with constant disruptions due to the weather.

“Yields of winter and spring barley have been very good,” she says. “Wheat, although good quality has been disappointing.

“The early-season weather has produced high straw yields but the dull and wet June/July has hampered the grain.”
